ARTIST STATEMENT
"I participated in this Big Print opportunity to expand and develop my ' Urban Cowboy' series, which is included as a sample of my work. Cowboys, often categorized as hyper masculine, have been modernized and adopted into contemporary culture and in many instances used as a vehicle through which to express sexuality and the power of femininity.
This series explores the highly decorated, and glamorized aesthetic of the modern cowboy. Particular examples include musicians like Lil Nas X and Orville Peck. These two artists express their queerness through pivoting the traditional notions of a cowboy. They simultaneously flaunt and revel in the hyper masculine idealization of the cowboy, and twist expectations through rhinestones, excessive fringe, and floral embellishments while singing about their lovers, past, present and future.
This series explores, through close-up portraiture, the adaptation of the cowboy aesthetic to embrace a broader representation of the 'all American cowboy.'"
