Eh Pleh's journey and mastering the platters
Imagine owning not just a platter, but a masterpiece - each one meticulously crafted by the talented hands of local artist Eh Hsoe. Within every piece lies a mesmerizing crystal design. This captivating effect is made possible by the innovative glaze recipe developed by none other than Vartan Poghosian, our esteemed founder, Director of Education, and master ceramic artist. Through years of tireless experimentation, Vartan has perfected this recipe, creating the ideal environment for these exquisite crystals to bloom. Just as crystals slowly form within the glaze, Eh's journey as both an artist and a vital member of 4 Elements has been one of gradual growth and transformation.
Eh and her family immigrated to this country from Thailand in November of 2009 and settled into their new home in the Cornhill neighborhood of Utica, NY. At the age of 8, Eh found herself immersed in a school environment where English was the primary language, posing a significant challenge for her. Yet, over time, she adapted, gradually learning how to navigate the language barrier, establishing roots, and forging her identity through the creative process. In 2015, at the age of 14, she crossed paths with Vartan, embarking on a journey of learning that continues to this day.
“Back in 2015 Vartan welcomed me into 4 Elements Studio and it’s been a second home to me ever since. I started with the Bead by Bead program learning how to make beads, pendants, and the business aspect of things. 4 Elements played a huge role in my growth as a creator and as an individual. They provided me with a safe space to learn, explore my artistic abilities, and ask questions; helping me build my confidence as I watch and learn from everyone around me. Through 4 Elements I’ve met so many amazing people and made new friends who inspire me to leave my comfort zone and explore life,” Eh reflects.
Despite briefly venturing away from the studio to pursue studies in welding and metal fabrication at MVCC, Eh's commitment to her artistic calling remained steadfast. Now back in the fold as a full-time employee, her responsibilities span a wide spectrum, from overseeing the Bead by Bead program to managing kiln firings, teaching classes, and assisting with administrative duties.
She states, “When I first joined the program I never would’ve imagined 4 Elements would become such an important part of my life. After graduating MVCC I'm back right where I started, back at 4 Elements and I couldn't be happier.”
Eh's journey from a newcomer overcoming language barriers to a cornerstone of the studio community epitomizes resilience, perseverance, and unwavering dedication. We are incredibly fortunate to have her presence enriching our studio, and we eagerly anticipate her continued contributions in shaping the direction and spirit of 4 Elements Studio.
