Wheel-Thrown Functional Pottery
Description
This workshop will emphasize the characteristics that define a functional piece. Discussions will include the tactile experience of the item, its practicality in the kitchen, and the balance between functionality (such as washability, stability on the table, and the contrast between lightweight and durability) and aesthetic appeal.
Participants will receive an introduction to various items, including cups, bowls, plates, and, notably, mugs. The initial segment of the class will concentrate on skill development at the pottery wheel, aiming for students to create a matching set of pieces they find particularly appealing. Once the hands-on work begins, students will formulate a plan for their major project.
We focus on making vessels for food and drink with Ryan’s mantra of UPS (Useful, Pretty, and Strong).
