Nyamuoch Nguoth is a self-taught artist who works with various mediums but has a deep connection to charcoal, a material that was always accessible during their upbringing in refugee camps.
Born in South Sudan but raised in displacement, art became more than just a creative outlet—it was a means of survival
and escape. Through drawing and painting, Nyamuoch found freedom from the harsh realities of camp life, using art to navigate depression and avoid the struggles that often define refugee experiences. Their early work focused on the everyday challenges of displacement, while more recent pieces explore the complexities of South Sudanese identity, shaped by stories passed down from their mother and grandmother rather than lived experience.
Nyamuoch’s artistic journey took a turning point in Dadaab Refugee Camp, Kenya, where they held their first exhibition on World Refugee Day and discovered art’s power to connect and sustain. Since then, they have exhibited annually on World Refugee Day, up until 2023, and participated in their first major show at the Affordable Art Show in Nairobi. Through each piece, Nyamuoch invites viewers to see the world through a refugee’s eyes—to feel the weight of displacement, the longing for home, and the search for belonging. Their work is a visual narrative of resilience, identity, and the emotional landscape of exile.
