It’s widely known that after leaving art school a majority of the graduates will also leave the art
field. That is not to say they stop making art or find other ways to express their creativity. Those
who leave and those that stay in the arts both may never have an opportunity to organize a
show of their work again.
This was true for both of the instructors, Christine and myself; neither of us have created a habit
of showing our own work since our thesis shows. In organizing this show with our former
students our intention is to create a more natural off-ramp and provide the push that we would
have wanted to continue making and showing work. A way to bridge the academic and the art
world so to develop the tools necessary to continue artistic pursuits with or without the structure
of the school’s support.
The purpose of this show is to help the transition from student artists to the larger artistic
community, giving support while they grow in their craft, and motivation to keep creating. It’s
hard to continue making work when all of life is vying for your attention. We hope that by
participating in this show it will help instill us all with the confidence and habits to continue
creating.
Mohawk Valley Community College has been kind to us with their support for this endeavor
through the MVCC Foundation scholarship fund. This fund will receive 20% of any of the sale
proceeds. We would also like to thank the MVCC school of art for providing printing and
additional support. Finally we also would like to thank 4 Elements Studio for providing us a
venue to hang our work and help through this process especially on short notice as they have
just relocated to this new location.
Thank you for supporting local arts.
